The Enactus UWA Design Challenge invites university students across Australia to help shape Australia’s first recycled thermoplastic 3D printed tiny home.
This is not just a concept challenge. Students will contribute ideas to a real circular construction project exploring how recycled polymer recovered from decommissioned subsea infrastructure in the oil and gas industry can be transformed into compact, liveable housing. Enactus UWA is working with Hyperion Systems, a Western Australian large-format additive manufacturing startup, to explore how standout ideas from the challenge could help move the project toward a real built outcome.
Participants will design a tiny home on wheels for a regional Australian setting, using the unique possibilities of large-format 3D printing to create forms, layouts and features that traditional construction cannot easily achieve. Strong submissions should be creative, modern, feasible to print and genuinely liveable, while making smart use of a compact footprint.
Students from any field are welcome. This is an opportunity to build a standout portfolio piece at the intersection of emerging construction technology, sustainable materials and forward-thinking housing design, while competing for a share of a $1,500 prize pool.
Submissions will be assessed by a judging panel expected to include representatives from Enactus UWA, SONA WA, Woodside Energy, Hyperion Systems and other contributors connected to the project. Winning and standout submissions may also be showcased to industry partners and considered as the project develops.
Full details, submission requirements and judging criteria are available in the Enactus UWA Design Challenge Brief, accessible after registering.
All times shown in Australia/Sydney (AEST/AEDT).
This competition is open to all current university students enrolled at an Australian university, undergraduate or postgraduate, in any field of study.
Students may enter as individuals or in teams of up to four members. Teams may include students from different universities. Each person may only be part of one entry.
Once registered, participants will receive access to the Enactus UWA Design Challenge Brief, including the full design context, submission requirements, judging criteria, key expectations and supporting materials for the competition.
Participants do not need to be studying architecture or design. Anyone with the skills and interest to design a tiny home is welcome.
Each submission must meet the hard constraints set out in the Enactus UWA Design Challenge Brief, including the maximum dimensions, maximum floor area and mandatory functional requirements.
AI generated design material is not permitted. Entrants must not use AI tools to generate or materially develop renders, design concepts, floor plans, elevations, sections, 3D models, videos or other core design outputs. Submissions must reflect the entrant’s own original design work.
By registering for and entering this competition, entrants agree that Enactus UWA may use, adapt, develop and print submitted designs as part of the project, in line with the full competition terms.

Who can enter?
The competition is open to all current university students enrolled at an Australian university, undergraduate or postgraduate, in any field of study.
Do I need to study architecture or design to enter?
No. We encourage anyone with the interest and skills to take part. You do not need to be studying architecture or design, and we welcome ideas from students across different fields, backgrounds and disciplines.
What is a tiny home on wheels?
A tiny home on wheels is a compact, self contained dwelling built onto a registered trailer chassis. For this challenge, the home must be transportable, road legal within the stated dimensions, and designed to function as a liveable small home once installed.
Where can I find the full requirements?
Full details are available in the Enactus UWA Design Challenge Brief.
Will the winning design actually be printed?
There is a strong possibility that the winning design, or elements of standout submissions, will be considered for Enactus UWA’s first printed tiny home. While the final built outcome may need to be adapted for technical, material and manufacturing requirements, the goal is for this challenge to help shape a real printed home.
Do I need to be based in Western Australia?
No. The competition is open to current university students across Australia. You do not need to be based in Western Australia to enter, and teams may include students from different Australian universities.
Who should I contact if I have questions?
